Japan’s best central midfielder Makoto Hasebe (40-Frankfurt) will retire from international football after this season. If Korea had Park Ji-Sung, Japan had Hasebe.

German Bundesliga club Frankfurt announced on Sunday (KST) that Hasebe will end his professional career at the end of the 2023-2024 season.

Hasebe made his debut with Urawa Reds of the Japanese J-League in 2002. He moved to Europe in 2008 when he signed with Wolfsburg. He spent time at Nurnberg before joining Eintracht Frankfurt in 2014.

‘Hasebe came to Frankfurt in 2014. He won the DFB Cup and the UEFA Europa League. He also qualified for the Champions League. He has already collected several trophies in Japan, including the J-League title and the AFC Champions League title. He is the third most capped player of all time in the Bundesliga with 383 appearances. He is a member of the Bundesliga Legends Network.

Hasebe has also served as captain of the Japan national team. He captained Japan to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and 2018 World Cup in Russia. He was a member of the 2011 Asian Cup winning team.

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot. I think now is the right time. I’ve been a professional soccer player for 22 years. It’s time to end my career. I will never forget the time I spent in Frankfurt. Hasebe will remain in Frankfurt to coach after his retirement.
