‘Legend’ Gerrard claims to be the fourth man to do so
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has called for a statue to be erected at Anfield in honor of Jürgen Klopp, who is leaving the club at the end of the season.
“As Liverpool legends past and present pay tribute to Klopp, Gerrard has called for a statue of the German to be erected at Anfield,” the UK’s Daily Mail reported on Aug. 18.
Klopp is a legend for giving Liverpool a second wind. He was appointed in 2015 and has been at the helm for nearly nine years, transforming the Reds from a mid-table club to one of Europe’s top clubs.
After a rebuilding season that saw the arrival of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Fabinho, Sadio Mane, and others, Liverpool finished runners-up in the UEFA Champions League in 2017-18, and then reached the final again in 2018-19, defeating Tottenham Hotspur to win the title.
It was their first trophy in a long time. Liverpool, who had fallen into a dark age since winning the League Cup in 2011-12, won the trophy seven years after Klopp’s arrival.
The 2019-20 season was a golden one, as they beat Manchester City to win their first league title since the inception of the Premier League. The Reds had some great players, but it wouldn’t have been possible without Klopp’s leadership.
After bringing glory to Liverpool, Klopp decided to hang up his boots this summer. He said that he didn’t have the energy to lead the team anymore and wanted to take a break.
The final game of the season is upon us. Liverpool legends past and present have said goodbye to Klopp as he leaves the club.
According to the Daily Mail, Gerrard said, “The club should erect a statue of him as soon as possible. I think he deserves it,” Gerrard claimed, adding, “I started to get excited from his first press conference. There have been managers who have had tremendous 사설토토 success at Liverpool, but Klopp is the best of them all.”
Currently, there are only three statues of Liverpool’s past managers – Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley and club founder John Howarding. Gerrard emphasized that Klopp’s stature is comparable to those three.
Jamie Carragher also gave a thumbs up, saying “Klopp is one of the best managers Liverpool have ever had” and added: “He’s done a great job for a new generation of fans. He’s right up there at the top. If the best Liverpool manager was Bill Shankly, Klopp is the Shankly of this era. That’s a huge legacy.”
Kenny Dalglish, a legend as both player and manager, said: “When Klopp came, we knew we were in for a great ride. “I told everyone to fasten their seatbelts, it was fantastic,” he said, adding that “winning the league was a very special moment” and thanking Klopp for his contribution.
Current Liverpool ace Salah added: “Klopp has developed me as a player. “Obviously, we helped each other a lot, and we gave everything to help Liverpool win the title,” he said, adding: “Being able to call him when I have a problem and ask for his opinion is the biggest thing I’ve gained as a person. I will have this relationship for the rest of my life,” he said, reflecting on a friendship that goes beyond a priestly relationship.
