‘Cuevas 8 innings, 1 run’ KT sweeps 3-game series with Lotte…pressure on leader LG

The second-place KT WIZ swept a three-game series in Busan to put pressure on the first-place LG Twins.

KT defeated the Lotte Giants 2-1 today (June 27) at Sajik Stadium in Busan in the first game of their three-game visit to the Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League 스포츠토토.

KT, which was in 10th place (18 wins, 30 losses, and two draws) until June 5, has since moved up to second place with 44 wins and 17 losses, and is now threatening leader LG.

William Cuevas, who KT manager Lee Kang-cheol has identified as a “rebounding force,” pitched eight innings of six-hit ball to earn his eighth win of the season.

Since returning to KT in June, Cuevas hasn’t lost a game in 12 appearances this season.

KT ended the game with two pitchers as Kim Jae-yoon pitched one hitless inning in the ninth.

KT took the lead in the top of the third when Ahn Chi-young doubled to left-center with two outs and Hwang Jae-gyun followed with an RBI single to left.

In the fourth inning, after one out, Oh Yoon-seok hit a triple to right-center and Shin Bon-ki followed with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Lotte got one run back in the bottom of the sixth inning on Jung-hoon’s “lucky double” with two outs. KT right fielder Ahn Chi-young threw himself to catch Jung-hoon’s hit, but the ball went behind him.

However, Lotte was unable to score another run and suffered a one-run loss.

Lotte starter Na Gyun-an pitched well, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out nine in seven innings, but couldn’t get any help from his team’s bats and suffered his sixth loss of the season.

Na hasn’t added a win in seven games since June 9 against the Samsung Lions, losing five of them.

On that day, Lotte manager Larry Sutton vacated the dugout after feeling dizzy, leaving assistant coach Lee Jong-woon in charge of the team.

Seventh-ranked Lotte went on a seven-game losing streak in the coach’s absence, further diminishing their chances of making the postseason.

KT continued its absolute dominance against Lotte this season, going 12-3.
