Soyang Gangbae Youth Ice Hockey Tournament Completed
The Pohang Angels and Turtles S topped the high school and low school divisions of the 2023 Soyang Gangbae National Youth Ice Hockey Tournament.
Organized by the Gangwon Minjoo Ilbo and the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Ice Hockey Association, and sponsored by the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education, Chuncheon City, and Chuncheon City Corporation, the tournament featured 10 teams in each of the elementary high school and low school divisions competing for the title over five days from April 24 to 28. The tournament was organized to discover the next generation of ice stars who will lead Korea’s ice hockey in the future and to expand the base of winter sports.
In the high school final, the Pohang Angels defeated the Waves 6-4. The Waves utilized Matthew’s dribbling ability to find the back of the net, but Pohang Angels’ Lee Ji-sub scored three goals and two assists, Jang Hyun-seo scored one goal and two assists, and Shin Jimin scored two goals to lead his team to victory.
The same day in the lower division, the Turtles S defeated the T-Rex 3-1. The T-Rexes took the lead in the first period when Lee Hyun-ho hit a mid-range shot from near the halfway line that found the back of the net, but TurtlesS equalized two minutes later when Jeon Jun-hoo scored. In the second and third periods, Min Dong-yoon and Cho Hyo-min (both Turtles) scored one goal each, while the Turtles’ strong defensive organization prevented them from conceding any more goals. With the victory, Pohang Angels and Turtles S were crowned champions after winning all six games they played from the preliminary round to the final.
Among the teams from the province, Chuncheon Little High One had a strong showing, taking third place in both the senior and junior divisions. Gangneung Little High One just missed out on qualifying.
At the awards ceremony, which was attended by Kyung Min-hyun, vice president of the Gangwon Minjaeil, and Yoo Shin-hwan, vice president of the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Ice Hockey Association, the winners of each division received a trophy, a certificate, and a cash prize of KRW 1 million. The runner-up team received a trophy, a certificate, and a cash prize of 700,000 won, and the third place team received a trophy, a certificate, and a cash prize of 500,000 won.
“Ice hockey used to be a dangerous sport, but now it is especially popular because it helps children develop strong physical strength, teamwork, and leadership,” said Kyung Min-hyun. “Next year, the Gangwon Minjoo Daily and the Do Ice Hockey Association will do their best to make the tournament even more fun.” 토토
