Taekwondo’s Seo Gun-woo goes for gold in men’s 80-kilogram category

On the 14th day of the Games, Seo Gun-woo (Korea National Taekwondo Team) has a gold medal to look forward to.

Seo will face Joaquin Churchil (Chile) in the men’s 80-kilogram taekwondo round of 16 at 4:21 p.m. on Monday at the Grand Palais in Paris, France.

The quarterfinal and semifinal draws are relatively tough, with Seo likely to face tough opponent Salih Elsharabati (Jordan) in the quarterfinals, and if he wins, he will face Olympic No. 1 Simone Alessio (Italy) in the semifinals.

“Just as my seniors have passed on so much to me, I will do my best to set a good example for the younger generation,” said Seo, who will be competing in the men’s 80-kilogram category for the first time.

Lee Han-bit (Wanju County) will compete in the women’s freestyle 62 kg category.

Lee was originally unqualified for the Games, but dramatically flew to Paris earlier this month after North Korea’s Moon Hyon Kyong returned her qualification.

Lee, who suffered from stress paralysis after failing to qualify for the Olympic Games at the Asian Quarterfinals in Paris, vowed to compete without regret, saying, “I’m on the stage I’ve always wanted to be on.”

In the men’s 89-kilogram weightlifting category, Lee Yoo-joo (Jinan, China) will compete in his third Olympic Games.

The South Korean athlete has been on an upward curve, finishing 14th in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and eighth in Tokyo in 2021, and will be aiming for a top finish at the Games.

In the up-and-coming pentathlon, Jeon Woong-tae (Gwangju Metropolitan Government) and Seo Chang-wan (Armed Forces Athletic Corps) will compete in the semifinals for a medal.

In artistic swimming, Lee Ri-young (Busan Swimming Federation) and Heo Yoon-seo (Sungkyunkwan University) will perform underwater acts with the aim of breaking into the ‘top 10’.

This will be the first time in 12 years that a South Korean athlete has competed in the Olympic Artistic Swimming Duet since London 2012.

South Korea’s best Olympic result in the event was an 11th-place finish by Yunami and Jang Yoon-kyung in Sydney 2000. 바카라게임
