Its Canoe Charter Team Looked Back at the ‘Barnacle Boat’

The canoe charter team looked back at the ‘Barnacle Boat’, “I’m worried about China’s territoriality…”

“It’s the responsibility of the organizer, so there are some things we can’t do anything about…

Overcome it with your skills.”

Coach Park Min-ho (Seosan City Hall), who leads the Canoe Yongseon men’s national team, remembers the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

From this competition, dragon boating, in which 12 players, including 10 paddlers, a coxswain, and a drummer (drum player) compete as a team, became an official event in the Asian Games.

Men’s National Team

The men’s national team, who entered the competition with dreams of medal hunting, pulled off an upset by taking first place in the 1,000m preliminary round.

It is known that dragon boats originated from the Pearl River Delta area in Guangdong Province, China.

As such, teams from Greater China and Southeast Asia are showing strength.

However, in the finals, she had to be content with a bronze medal with a record of 3 minutes 37.254 seconds, which was worse than the preliminaries (3 minutes 35.646 seconds).

Park Min-ho

Coach Park, who made his mark as a player on the field at the time, still feels sad when he thinks about that time.

It is said that the boat assigned in the finals has a ‘barnacle’ attached to it.

When barnacles attach, the ship becomes less streamlined,

increasing resistance and increasing weight, making it difficult to achieve speed.

13 years later, Director Park goes to China again.

This time, he is not a player, but a leader leading the Hangzhou Asian Games national team.

Yongseon Team

At the Yongseon national team media day held at the main auditorium of the Buyeo Women’s Cultural Center in South Chungcheong Province on the 7th,

Coach Park reflected, “In the 2010 Guangzhou Games preliminaries in which I participated with the current captain Ja-wook Koo, we had a good record that was enough to be checked by other teams.”

He continued, “There was an article at the time.

Barnacle Incident

It was called a ‘barnacle incident,’ and I went to the finals after receiving a bad boat with a lot of stuff stuck to the bottom.”

He added, “China’s ‘territoriality’ can never be ignored.”

He added, “We are prepared.

Since this is the responsibility of the organizer, there may be force majeure situations that we cannot do anything about.”

He then emphasized that he would overcome all territorial tendencies with his skills.

Coach Park said, “As a coach, I think we have no choice but to overcome it with our skills.

Everyone is concerned, but we will do our best and work together with the players to overcome it with our skills.”

The men’s and women’s national teams, led by Coach Park and Ha Jae-heung (Gangwon Canoe Federation) women’s coach,

will compete in the 200m, 500m, and 1,000m events.

The men’s team focuses on the 1,000m.

Women’s team focuses on the 500m, which won a gold medal at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games as a unified team between North and South Korea.

National Team

The national team began full-scale training on the 29th of last month.

Although training is delayed compared to other countries that have prepared for several years,

the national team boldly aims for the gold medal.

This is because the team was formed by gathering athletes who are good at 1,000m and 500m races in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.

Coach Park said, “Although the training period is not long,

the entire team will do our best and come back with a gold medal.

Looking at the composition of the players, we must set the goal of winning the gold medal and challenge ourselves.”

He then said, “The composition of our national team’s players is better than that of the 2018 Asian Games,”

“The men’s team has become stronger than the unified team of South and North Korea.”

“The women’s team also built a team with just as much strength,” he said confidently.
