Infomercial leads Korea to 8-2 win over Philippines
Korea’s 30th Asian Baseball Confederation (ABC) National Team, led by head coach Shin Jung-myung, defeated the Philippines 8-2 in the first game of the Super Round at the Taipei Dome.
Korea scored its first two runs in the top of the first inning on a walk by Jung Jun-young (KT Wiz) and a single up the middle by Park Joo-chan (NC Dinos), with runners on first and third on groundouts by Na Seung-yeop (Lotte Giants) and Yoo Eui-yeol (Hanwha Eagles). (0-2)
However, Jang Ji-soo (Hanwha Eagles), who pitched a perfect game against the Filipino bats until the top of the third inning, gave up a leadoff double to the leadoff batter in the top of the fourth inning and then gave up two consecutive hits to tie the game. (2-2)
Korea immediately regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kim Bum-seok (LG Twins) and Lee Min-joon (Hanwha Eagles) led off with a walk and a single, respectively, and both scored on back-to-back errors. In the bottom of the fifth, Park Joo-chan led off with a double to right-center field, and Na Seung-yeop followed with an infield single to the first baseman to bring in two more runs. (2-5)
In the bottom of the seventh inning
Na Seung-yeop walked and a wild pitch put runners on first and second, Kim Bum-seok hit a double down the left field line, and Kim Sung-woo (LG Twins) 안전놀이터 followed with an RBI single to bring in two more runs, with one more run scoring in the bottom of the eighth. (2-8)
On the pitching side, the bullpen of Shin Heon-min (SSG Landers), Jung Hyun-soo (Songwon University), Kim Dong-hyuk (Kiwoom Heroes), Kang Min-gu (Yonsei University), and Cho Byung-hyun (SSG Landers), who came in after starter Jang Ji-soo, did not allow any more runs against the Philippines. With a 1-1 record in the Super Round, South Korea will play its final game of the Super Round against Japan on September 9 at 13:30 at the Taipei Dome with a spot in the finals at stake.
